About YPG

Young People Guernsey (YPG) is a Guernsey charity (formed in 2010), which identifies and responds to the needs of young people in the Bailiwick, particularly those in need, and ultimately those at risk.

Our first project is a partnership with Barnardo´s – the UK´s largest children´s charity – to open a youth information, advice and counselling centre (“one-stop shop”) in St. Peter Port for young people aged 11-16 years. This is a ground-breaking venture for Guernsey.

The development of our Centre arose as there was a need for a neutral, independent, professional advice centre within Guernsey for young people aged 11-16 years: a place where young people could access free and confidential support, allowing them to make informed choices. A place where we make their problems our problems;

Our Centre is neutral and informal, but not purposeless. It is not a youth club –  it is somewhere to go when young people want help, and also when they have nowhere else to go;

Our Centre provides a professional, sustainable resource that adheres to the highest standards. Barnardo´s recruit, train and manage local professionals, allowing Guernsey young people access to Barnardo´s vast resource of experience and expertise, delivered through a local charity;

Young people are able to find support and advice at the centre for every kind of issue: from the difficult issues of bullying, relationship and family problems, education, substance abuse, sexuality and sexual health issues, emotional health, self-harming, homelessness, mental health, careers, sexual, physical and psychological abuse to the more practical such as needing internet access;

Our Centre is manned full-time by professionals and trained volunteers; it opens according to need with an emphasis on after-school and week-end hours;

By targeting our facility at young people aged 11-16 years, intervention in children ´s problems is earlier, and young people can seek help without the intimidating presence of older teenagers. The partnership with Barnardo´s and the creation of this Centre is an important and significant development for young people in Guernsey: we now have an opportunity to reach some of the most vulnerable young members of our community. As a result, we can create that extra reach and help younger teenagers to fulfil their maximum potential.

All funds raised on the island will be used on the island.

To make this happen we need your help.

The annual cost of running the centre are £150,000 so this is a huge challenge. But what a worthwhile cause – helping young teenagers to change their futures.
